About Six Sigma (6s)

Performance and process improvements have become the mantra for survival in the wake of dynamic market conditions and ever increasing customer demands. Among the several tools and techniques being employed to bring about performance improvements, Six Sigma is proving to be one of the most effective and versatile tools.

What is Six Sigma

Six Sigma is a disciplined methodology that uses data and statistical analysis to improve operational performance by reducing the defects that are inherent to the nature of the process. Six Sigma methodology adopts a specific problem solving approach that helps organizations in improving processes and products. Contrary to popular belief, Six Sigma can be applied to all types of organizations-Manufacturing, Service, BPO’s etc.

Typical Benefits of Six Sigma

Six Sigma can be applied to all functions within an organization. Some of the examples are;

  • Commercial / Finance Cost reduction, working capital optimization
  • Operations / Quality Control: Reduction in defects / rejections, reduced inspection stages
  • Logistics: Improved inventory turnaround, improved delivery performance
  • Human Resources: Reduction in staff turnover
  • Marketing and Sales: Improved enquiry to order ratio, greater levels of customer satisfaction
Methodology

Key elements of Six Sigma methodology include identifying areas that need to be addressed and creating project teams that will be assigned responsibility for addressing the issues. About Lean Manufacturing

What is Lean Manufacturing?

CEOs are under a constant pressure to innovate, move ahead, keep costs low and compete in a customer driven market. Very few companies are in a monopolistic situation. There is a list of tools, which are available to organizations for process and operations control. However there may be very few who are taking a scientific approach to manage and implement these tools.

Lean manufacturing is a Japanese philosophy. This talks about eliminating wastes from the process. Lean is a philosophy which says that the customer will only pay for the value adding stages in any process. We must try and break every process into value adding and non-value adding activities. So lean focuses on elimination of the non-value adding activities. There are 8 different kinds of waste identified which may be attacked and removed. These are:

  1. Motion
  2. Transportation
  3. Defects/Rework
  4. Waiting
  5. Over processing
  6. Inventory
  7. Overproduction
  8. Unused Human Talent

Benefits of Lean Manufacturing:
  1. Improvement in productivity and quality
  2. Introduction of innovative practices for improving overall competitiveness
  3. Increase in manufacturing output
  4. Reduction in quality rejection at every stage of production process
  5. Lesser inventory requirements at every stage of production
  6. Optimum utilization of resources in terms of space, manpower, material, equipment utilization and energy consuption
